New Westminster is a close-knit Canadian community. As British Columbia’s oldest city, New Westminster is made up of friendly people, beautiful parks, charming shops, interesting historical buildings, and a strong community spirit. Ours is a small, safe, and pleasant city in which to live and study. We are part of Greater Vancouver, and downtown Vancouver is only 25 minutes away by the convenient SkyTrain.

Situated along the north banks of the Fraser River, the city of New Westminster is blessed with spectacular views and glorious landscape. New Westminster is located in the heart of the Lower Mainland. Our centralized location provides easy access to neighbouring communities – Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Coquitlam and Richmond.

Homestay is a valuable part of your study-abroad experience. It is important to us that every International student studying in New Westminster feels safe and comfortable with his or her homestay family.

Our Homestay Manager determines the needs of each student and matches his or her needs to a local homestay family. For example, if you are allergic to cats, we will arrange for you to stay with a homestay family that does not have a cat in the house. Homestay families provide students with the necessary items to ensure they are warm and comfortable. Services provided by the homestay family include: A private bedroom furnished with a bed, dresser, desk, chair, desk lamp and closet, three meals a day with nutritious snacks and beverages and in-house laundry facility

Study at the New Westminster Secondary School

Upon arrival, new International students take an English test, then are given a combination of academic and ESL classes suitable to their level. We have four levels of ESL, from beginner to advanced levels. Students are reassessed at the end of each semester to see how much they have improved, and advance to the next level according to their improvement.

The International Education Program provides long-term academic studies for students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 (ages 5-18). We have several long-term programs, allowing students to study for one semester, one year, or to complete high school.

The regular school year begins every September and ends in June. International students may enter the school in either September or February. Long-term students have a deep immersion experience. Their spoken and written English improves rapidly, and they become comfortable with the Canadian lifestyle, culture and education system.

In addition to a first-rate education, the International Education Program offers students many opportunities to join in school service clubs, recreational activities and sports teams. Our long-term programs provide a balance of academic study and school activities to ensure students enjoy a complete education experience.

Canadian senior high schools offer students choices in their studies because Grade 10, 11 and 12 are years when students begin preparing for university or college. Therefore, we have both core academic courses and elective courses. Students can often choose from several courses to complete their graduation requirements. NWSS offers students a wide range of programs and courses to choose from.
